INTERVIEW NGÔ THẾ VINH - author of “Vòng Đai Xanh / The Green Belt”

by NGUYỄN MAI [19.06.1972]

The young author Ngô Thế Vinh lives in a modest house, in the Hòa Hưng suburb. It has a difficult to locate street address -- not because it has many sub numbers -- but because the first number in the address belongs to a house that does not lead to a side street.

It is at that difficult-to-locate house that Ngô Thế Vinh greets me by the side of a small desk, on which the writing instruments consist of nothing else but a portable typewriter (problaby his faithful companion during his travel all over the tri-border region, during the cross-border into Cambodia, and who knows where else —considering that he is a physician attached to the Airborne Ranger Group) a piece of pencil, and a large cup still showing coffee dregs at the bottom.  To be honest, when the editor-in-chief gave me Ngô Thế Vinh’s address, I imagined meeting him at a doctor’s office or at least a living room in a luxurious house. The “super artist” atmosphere in which we meet, fortunately, helps set the tone for an open and intimate exchange.

PHỎNG VẤN nhà văn NGÔ THẾ VINH tác giả “Vòng đai xanh”

do NGUYỄN MAI thực hiện

A BOOK REVIEW BY HOANG NGOC NGUYEN

THE GREEN BELT
WHO’S TO BLAME?

“The Green Belt” is a semi-fictional political novel dealing with the Vietnam War (1960-75) in the years of the war’s Americanization, following the Viet Cong’s Ha Noi-incited uprising all over the south in five years, followed by its staggering Vietnamization until the tragic end.

The story focuses on the political stage of a highland tribal district (Ban Me Thuot) bordering Laos and Cambodia, and looking out the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the main road driving Communist soldiers from the North into the South.

JOHN STEINBECK, 1962 NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATE

Born on 02/27/1902 in Salinas, Central California. He grew up in the lush rural valley called the “Salad Bowl” watered by the Salinas River. After graduating from high school (1919), he had his heart set on becoming a writer and took courses in English literature and Creative writings at the well-known Stanford University near Palo Alto. In 1923, Steinbeck signed up for Biology courses at Hopkins Marine Station where he met Williams E. Ritter and became more interested in Ecology. In 1925, after 6 years, he left Stanford without a degree on account of his infrequent attendance record. Steinbeck decided to move to New York taking on all kinds of menial jobs to live and try his luck in journalism and writing but failed to have his first book published.
