Introduction: For 88 years, Prof. Hoàng Tiến Bảo knew an extremely rich and varied existence. We would need a full-length book to render justice to such a life. This is only a short essay intermingled with personal recollections to commemorate the 101st anniversary of our professor. With all due caution, the author wishes that this writing - though by all means not exhaustive – would still remain accurate. My sincere thanks and appreciation go to Professors Trần Ngọc Ninh and Đào Hữu Anh, my schoolmates at the Saigon School of Medecine for providing me with the private materials, photos and recollections from personal conversations to help bring about this writing.

Dẫn nhập: Cuộc đời 88 năm của GS Hoàng Tiến Bảo quá phong phú và đa dạng, phải cần tới một cuốn sách mới có thể phác hoạ được một chân dung đầy đủ về Thầy. Đây chỉ là một bài viết ngắn xen lẫn với cả những điều riêng tư, nhân dịp Tưởng niệm 101 Năm ngày Sinh của Thầy. Với tất cả sự thận trọng, người viết mong rằng bài tưởng niệm này, có thể chưa đầy đủ nhưng sẽ không có các chi tiết sai lạc. Cám ơn GS Trần Ngọc Ninh, GS Đào Hữu Anh, cùng các Bạn đồng môn từ các khoá Y khoa Đại học Sài Gòn đã cung cấp cho tư liệu, hình ảnh và cả những thông tin còn nhớ được qua các cuộc nói chuyện trao đổi để có thể hoàn thành bài viết.

J'ai lu “The Green Belt “avec beaucoup d'intérêt. Cela m'a rappelé des souvenirs des Hautes terres centrales dans les années soixantes et des événements entourant le bouddhisme et les agitations des étudiants pendant cette période. Il est clair que Ngo The Vinh a beaucoup appris sur les habitants des Hautes Terres et sur leur sort pendant la guerre et en l' après-guerre. Les nouvelles que je reçois maintenant des Hautes Terres sont très tristes. Les Montagnards font face à une menace pire qu'à aucun moment auparavant pour leur mode de vie.  Les Américains (comme les Français) ont exploité les Montagnards et les ont abandonnés froidement. Tout ce que l'on peut faire, c'est continuer d'essayer de porter ce sujet à l'attention des dirigeants américains à Washington. On espère encore en dépit de tout. Dr. Gerald C. Je suis impressionné par les connaissances, la prévoyance et la sympathie que Ngo The Vinh affiche dans The Green Belt” qu’il a écrit il y a déjà plus de trente ans. Bien que le roman soit une oeuvre de fiction, plusieurs événements auxquels il a fait allusion sont historiques et certains des personnages ressemblent beaucoup à des personnes réelles. La dynamique et les dilemmes dépeints étaient des vrais dilemmes pour les différentes parties impliquées et en particulier pour les Thượng (habitants des hauts plateaux) qui sont présentés comme les victimes des diverses politiques et conflits. I read The Green Belt with great interest. It brought me back memories of the Central Highlands in the 1960s and the events surrounding the Buddhist and the student unrest during that period. It’s clear that Ngo The Vinh learned a great deal about the highland people and their plight during the war and post-war world. What news I now get from the highlands is very sad. The Montagnards are facing a worse threat to their way of life than at any time previously. The Americans (like the French) used the Montagnards and coldly abandoned them. All one can do is to keep trying to bring it to the attention of American leaders in Washington. Still one hopes against hope.

Tôi đọc Vòng Đai Xanh với nhiều quan tâm. Cuốn sách đã gợi lại ký ức về Cao nguyên vào những năm 1960s và cả những biến cố liên quan tới Phật giáo và sinh viên cũng trong giai đoạn bất an đó. Rõ ràng là tác giả Ngô Thế Vinh đã hiểu biết rất rõ về các sắc dân Thượng cùng với những nguyện vọng của họ giữa và sau cuộc chiến tranh. Những tin tức hiện nay mà tôi nhận được từ Cao nguyên thật đáng buồn. Người Thượng đang phải đối đầu với những mối đe dọa tệ hại hơn bao giờ hết trên nếp sống của họ. Cũng như người Pháp trước đây, người Mỹ đã dùng người Thượng và sau đó đã lạnh lùng bỏ rơi họ. Điều mà người ta có thể làm là cố gắng tạo mối quan tâm từ các nhà lãnh đạo Mỹ ở Hoa Thịnh Đốn. Tôi rất xúc cảm về những hiểu biết, tầm nhìn xa và mối từ tâm mà Ngô Thế Vinh đã dàn trải trong Vòng Đai Xanh, cuốn sách được viết từ hơn 30 năm trước. Mặc dầu là một tiểu thuyết nhưng nhiều biến cố mang dấu ấn lịch sử và một số nhân vật thì như là rất thật. Đối với những phe phái liên hệ, qua những biến động và nghịch cảnh, thì các sắc dân Thượng luôn luôn là hình ảnh nạn nhân của các chính sách và những cuộc tranh chấp.
